For the next version of Etsy for Android I am thinking about adding a widget so all you Etsy lovers can get your fix right from the homescreen on your Android devices. The only question is… What should the widget show? What do you want to view on your homescreens?
So far, my ideas are:
- Recommended listings for you (as long as your account is linked). I can give you the option of approving, or disapproving recommended listings to refine what is recommended to you. I thought this could be a nice way to pass the time on a journey, you might find a few gems you wouldn’t have found otherwise.
- Featured listings. The listings on the main Etsy.com website are always interesting, would you like a look through those?
- New items from your favourite shops. I’m not sure if this is achievable to be honest, but I’m sure I could make something work.
- New sold items from your shop. A quick view on your recent transactions and whether they’ve been marked as shipped or paid.
One thing to bear in mind is that the widget should not have to update constantly to be useful, as this will run away with all your battery. The last item on the above list seems like it would have to be VERY up-to-date to be useful, and I’m not sure it’s a good idea.
The plan will be to eventually have a choice of widgets available to you. But for now, I have to choose something first, so what’s it to be?
EDIT: Etsy have just announced that they are discontinuing the recommended listings feature, so that one isn’t an option any more I’m afraid.
I personally like the most recently sold option.
Maybe in the settings of the widget we can choose how often it updates – once a day, every 12 hours, every 5 hours, every 2 hours, every 20 minutes, ect.

That will definitely be part of the plan for the widget. I want to make sure people have up to date information but it’s not running away with any more battery power than it has to.
As a buyer, I would like the widget to show new items from favorite sellers, updating regularly. Kind of like how the Facebook widget updates throughout the day. It would be nice to see more items from each shop, possibly with the ability to select which favorites you’d like to see new items from. I also agree with the above comment about selecting how often it updates as well. Thank you!
